Description

Erected as a Diocesan Shrine by the archbishop of Sorrento – Castellammare di Stabia mons. Felice Cece on December 6, 2005

Completed in 1966, after the first stone was laid in 1937 with the blessing of the then bishop of the diocese of Castellammare di Stabia Federico Emanuel.

After long works, on 4 December 1966 Monsignor Corrado Ursi, archbishop of Naples, consecrated the temple and its high altar. The completion of the building, whose construction was requested and wanted by Don Moses Mascolo, founder of the order of the Gerardine Sisters of Sant’Antonio Abate, therefore took place six years after his death on February 24, 1960.

The end of the works was also motivated by the fact that on 16 April 1962 the Sacred Congregation of Rites declared Saint Gerardo Maiella co-patron of the town. Furthermore, on 11 December 2005, 49 years after the consecration of the temple, the church became a diocesan sanctuary. From the monumental facade, more than 42 meters high and with a dome height of 33 meters, the sanctuary covers more than 900 m² of surface. With a Latin cross plan with three naves, of particular impact is the mixed gold mosaic placed behind the statue of San Gerardo, which makes up the niche, whose frame is in red French marble and whose pedestal (heavy five quintals) is in marble decorated with small amiato crosses with a gold background.

The chair of the celebrant is also made of marble, with a background of red Spanish marble and thrones of white marble. The chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Conception, the sarcophagus of the founder Don Moses Mascolo and the confessional used by the latter during his ministry enrich the building.
