Description

The basilica of Santa Maria di Pozzano rises in the hamlet of Pozzano in Castellammare di Stabia: tradition has it that the church was built in the place where the image of the Virgin Mary was found inside a well.

The construction works of the church, built on the site where, in Roman times, there was a temple probably dedicated to the goddess Diana, began in 1506 to be completed in 1539; in 1754, the sacristy was added to a design by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli. It was solemnly consecrated in 1874 by Bishop Francesco Saverio Petagna.

The church has a Latin cross shape, with a single nave, with four chapels on each side, while the ceiling is coffered with paintings by Michele Regolia. The right side of the transept is occupied by the chapel dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, while the chapel of the Madonna di Pozzano opens on the left, where the table of the same name dating back to the 11th or 12th century is placed. The sacristy houses the wooden crucifix found on the beach of Pozzano in 1631 during a procession called to stop the eruption of Vesuvius; in the same place there are pictorial works by Giacinto Diano and Sabastiano Conca. In the old sacristy there are visible remains of frescoes.
