Description

The sanctuary of Santa Maria della Sanità, located in the hamlet of Quisisana, is located in the place where a church dedicated to Thomas the Apostle and Mary Magdalene was built around the fourteenth century with the annexed monastery of the nuns of San Bartolomeo: when this was moved to the center of Castellammare di Stabia in 1583, the complex fell into ruin and all the liturgical material was transferred to the cathedral.

Of the old church there remained part of a fresco of the Madonna on a ruined wall which an old lady looked after by keeping it clean of brambles and lighting a little candle in the evening; the same lady was the protagonist of an inexplicable healing and, having ascertained the miracle, the bishop Biagio De Dura granted the construction of a church. The works began in May 1717 under the bishop Filippo Plagese and just under two months later it was consecrated.

The interior of the church has a single nave, with the entrance on the side. The main work is therefore the fresco called Madonna della Sanità crowned with a gold and sapphire diadem created by the Neapolitan goldsmith Vincenzo Catello: the Virgin was in fact solemnly crowned in 1911.
