Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Lobra

Gallery

Description

The works for the construction of the Sanctuary of Santissima Maria della Lobra began in 1528 and ended in 1564, as evidenced by the epigraph on the entrance portal. For the construction of the sanctuary, some elements of the ancient church that stood near the sea were reused. The entire sanctuary dominates the small fishing village with its facade on the square, called Madonna della Lobra. Attached to the Sanctuary is the convent built in 1583.

The interior has three naves with a transept, dome and apse. The eighteenth-century ceiling of the central nave has octagonal wooden coffers with gilded frames. The Assumption is depicted in the center between figures of little angels and below the scene of the navy with boats. On the sides, two other canvases depict a St. Anthony of Padua with the child offering the lily and the other St. Francis of Assisi delivering the rules to Santa Chiara.

Above the marble altar is kept, in a newsstand, the fresco depicting the image of the Madonna della Lobra, the work of an unknown artist.

In the two side naves there are four chapels, two of which are of particular importance: the Chapel of the Crucifix with the Magdalene and St. John the Apostle at the sides and the Chapel of St. Anna enriched and adorned with Baroque stuccos. The facade is from 1689.
