Description
The foundation stone of the sanctuary of the Sacred Heart, on the Scanzano hill, was laid by Bishop Vincenzo Sarnelli on 3 February 1895: the work was commissioned by the founder of the Compassionist Sisters Serve of Mary, Sister Maria Maddalena Starace, to complete the nascent adjoining convent. Due to economic problems, the church was only consecrated on 5 October 1908.
The entrance portal is in bronze, decorated with ten panels in which coats of arms and effigies are depicted. The interior has three naves with a barrel vault decorated with a fresco by Vincenzo Galloppi with the Crucifixion as its theme; by the same author are also the other frescoes in the chapels. On the main altar is the canvas of the Sacred Heart, by Roberto Scognamiglio. The mortal remains of the Blessed Maria Maddalena Starace are placed in a chapel on the right side, just before the main altar.
