Description
The Church of the SS Annunziata is the oldest evidence of the fifteenth century in the Angri district, in the town of Sant’Agnello.
In 1919, the Vatican Chapter crowned the altarpiece of the Sanctuary of the Annunziata and last year there were the celebrations for the centenary of that event.
Inside the Church of the SS Annunziata it is possible to admire the sacred image of the Archangel Gabriel, the Holy Spirit and the Virgin at the moment of the Annunciation. The work is by the Neapolitan master Silvestro Buono and was created in 1582.
The Coronation of the prodigious image was invoked by the inhabitants of the entire Sorrento Peninsula for the myriad of graces and favors granted.
Back in 1919, one hundred years ago, the Vatican Chapter crowned the altarpiece of the Sanctuary of the Annunziata, located in the Angri district in Sant’Agnello.
The sacred image, the work of the Neapolitan master Silvestro Buono, was created in 1582 and portrays the Archangel Gabriel, the Holy Spirit and the Virgin at the moment of the Annunciation. In the background we can see a Palestinian landscape and, below, the two patrons of the work whose identities are unknown.
The Coronation of the prodigious image was invoked by the inhabitants of the entire Sorrento Peninsula for the myriad of graces and favors granted. On that occasion the bell tower was built which still today overlooks the ancient fifteenth-century sanctuary.
The beautiful Marian effigy, patinated by the prayers and devotion of our ancestors, was adorned with a golden diadem embellished with gems.
The solemn ceremony saw a huge participation of the people.
This year our parish community celebrated the Centenary of the Coronation of the SS. Announced.
One hundred years have passed since our fathers asked for and obtained the coronation of the beloved effigy.
On the exact day of the Coronation, August 17, the celebration of Solemn Vespers recalled the joyful anniversary.
On 2 September a concelebration, presided over by our bishop Francesco Alfano, made us relive the moment of the coronation.
During the Eucharistic celebration, after the homily, an elderly lady and a little girl brought a diadem to the bishop, almost a witness that our ancestors have handed over to us and that we, in turn, entrust to future generations, as the Parish priest Don Francesco Saverio Iaccarino.
A copy of the prodigious image, built ad hoc for the event, allowed Don Antonio Parlato, assistant parish priest, to carry out the coronation in front of the many faithful present at Largo Annunziata.
All the Confraternities of Sant’Agnello took part in the deeply felt ceremony.
After the religious rite, the crowned effigy was carried in procession through the streets of the town. Upon the return of the pilgrims, in front of the Sanctuary, on the notes of the song “Evviva Maria”, sung by the Choir of Saints Prisco and Agnello and by all the faithful, the waving of white handkerchiefs greeted the unveiling of the altarpiece, embellished with a diadem golden.
Heartfelt thanks to all the splendid people who, with filial love and devotion to the Virgin, have allowed the realization of this event.
We just have to say: “Long live Mary and who created her”.
