Description

Confirmed Diocesan Shrine by the archbishop of Sorrento – Castellammare di Stabia mons. Francesco Alfano on 16 February 202X

The Sanctuary is located in the Campanian towns of Vico Equense and Pimonte on Monte Faito, the place where it is said that during the fifth century San Catello and San Antonino gathered in prayer.

The history of the Sanctuary is linked to these two important Neapolitan figures. San Antonino escaped from the Abbey of Montecassino after the Lombard invasions, once he arrived in Stabia he met the Bishop of the Diocese, Catello, who entrusted his friend with the care of the same to go in meditation on Monte Faito (known at the time with the name of Monte Aureo). Some time later the sides were reversed, it wasn’t long before San Catello himself returned to the mountain. One night St. Michael the Archangel appeared to the two in a dream and asked them to build a chapel in honor of him, in a very short time a primitive wooden temple was built. Catello was subsequently imprisoned in Rome, under the terrible accusation of witchcraft, fortunately the Saint came out without blemish and returned to the Mount in order to expand the temple. In the meantime Antonino became abbot of the Benedictine monastery in the city of Sorrento, he too found time to devote to the Sanctuary of San Michele, celebrating mass every day and obtaining the title of abbey for it.

Documents dating back to the second half of the 16th century speak for the first time of the miracle of the sweating of manna from the statue of the saint. It is said that during the Turkish invasion of Sorrento, a group of faithful hid inside the Sanctuary to ask for help from San Michele Arcangelo. It is said that the statue of the Saint began to “sweat”, the day after the city was liberated from the Turks. This miraculous event was repeated several times, even King Ferdinand II managed to witness it.

The numerous raids by brigands and the growing wave of vandalization led to the cessation of all forms of pilgrimage, causing the Sanctuary to fall into ruin. Various attempts were made to bring the structure to light, but they were in vain. Fortunately, after the Second World War, a new Church was built and consecrated. About twenty years later, at the behest of Monsignor Oscar Reschigg, the redevelopment works began, completed in 1973.
