Description

The Sanctuary of Maria SS di Costantinopoli, better known as the Incoronata, is located in a place called “Pozzale” .

It is said that in this locality, in an old dried-up well, an ancient painting depicting the Madonna was found and it was in that very place that, probably in 1660, the ancient chapel was built.

The original canvas depicting the Incoronata, an object of devotion, was stolen on the night of 10 July 1976 and the current painting was created by Father Alfonso Barba.

Huge works involved the church and in 1838, during the regency of Sorrentino, the bell tower was built, then rebuilt in the following century.

The church dedicated to Maria SS. of Constantinople has always been recognized as the church of the Incoronata. In 1877 the Virgin of Constantinople was declared Patroness of the Diocese of Castellammare by Bishop F. Saverio Petagna. The 1980 earthquake damaged the structure of the temple and above all the dome. Every three years, in the month of May, in honor of Maria SS. In Constantinople, solemn celebrations take place in the place where the painting with the image of the Madonna was found at the bottom of an old dried well.
